Constructed in 1993, the Luxor was designed to make Vegas family-friendly by merging casinos with a theme park environment. Initially, guests rode a boat on an artificial river to reach their rooms, a concept later abandoned due to long wait times. MGM Resorts International bought Luxor in 2007 and spent $300 million to modernize it, making it more like other resorts on the Strip. The renovations also added a bridge that connects it to sister resorts, Excalibur and Mandalay Bay, along with a free tram that runs between them.
Today the hotel looks nothing like its original form, except the unmistakable exterior. The change is welcome, however, as many thought the building was cursed until the early 2000s. Over the years, Luxor has expanded its offerings to include more than just a hotel and casino. Numerous restaurants, entertainment venues like the HyperX Esports Arena, and popular exhibits have been added to the complex. In 2022, the hotel also opened a new immersive display to celebrate Howard Carter's discovery of King Tutankhamun's tomb and pay homage to its own history.
